Standing in front of my locker, I change my clothes, preparing to once again become an anonymous citizen. I toss my police shirt into the locker, where it joins the hideous jumble of dirty clothes I’ve managed to pile up in a couple of months. I am a little more careful with my bulletproof, slipping it onto a hanger. A few lockers to my right, Loïc is taking off his belt and his shoes.

“We did fuck-all this morning. The Alpha is the only one who notched up an arrest.”

“Yeah, I heard something about it on the radio. What was it again?”

“We stopped a car and questioned a bunch of guys. Turns out they had a sword stashed in the car — a huge, vicious thing. They also had a knife, a crowbar, a balaclava, and a fucking bulletproof vest. Standard-issue bastard gear.”

The “bastards” in question were promptly arrested. Another MAD.

“The rest of us did bugger-all. Apart from a couple of tramps and a bunch of junkies, that was it.”

Most of my fellow officers find this thankless work, and I’m starting to find it boring — petty duties intended for a “toy cops”. No one here signed up for this kind of drudge work; they want callouts that get their adrenaline pumping: catching fleeing suspects, manning road checks. And, if at all possible, making arrests.

“Have you been at the station long?” I ask Loïc.

“No, only a couple of months. I’m still a rookie.”

I forgot that there is only one stripe on his uniform, which means that he’s not yet a fully fledged officer. He’s what older officers call a “probie”, “small fry”. After a year in the force, he will get a second stripe, making him a full officer.

“What did you do before?”

“I worked for Sephora.”

“The perfume shop?”

“Yeah. I hated it. I’ve wanted to apply for the force for a long time.”
